The Alberta Leadership Contenders and Open Data - On The Record

Last July, as part of an ongoing campaign to obtain open access to Alberta oil & gas data, Intellog challenged then provincial leadership hopefuls to state their position on opening up access to provincial government data. Now that the hotly contested (for once) provincial election campaign is reaching its conclusion, it’s worth revisiting the responses of the two leading candidates.

Ms. Alison Redford (PC), via email on 2011-08-17, responded; “I believe that open access to information is a basic principle of good government and intend to make data publicly available by default, unless there is a pressing reason to keep it private…I aim to have this system up and running by the end of my first term in office.” The entire, unedited email can be read here.

On 2011-09-08, Ms. Danielle Smith (Wildrose) provided a letter which in part stated; “[a] reverse onus of proof should be put in place mandating that before any FOIP requests are denied, the government must prove to the Privacy Commissioner that the information requested by the media or public should not be released…we propose that any denials should be approved by the commissioner so that the government is not tempted to hide information.” The entire, unedited letter can be read here.

In the spirit of fairness, I will refrain from comment, but do encourage readers to provide their input on the leaders’ responses. If you see fit, tell others and have them contribute their thoughts as well. Free and open access to data is absolutely fundamental to good, fair and effective government, so please let your voice be heard on this vitally important matter.

The leaders have clearly stated their positions, in writing, and now it’s up to you to decide which you prefer and vote accordingly. Rest assured that whoever is eventually successful, they will be reminded in writing of their commitments on open data.
